About

The Worlds First Preserved Railway. Running continuously since 1865, the Talyllyn Railway represents a step back in time to the Victorian Age!

Experience the nostalgia of historic steam trains in some of Wales’ finest landscapes. The railway starts on the southern Snowdonia coast at Tywyn, snakes through the foothills of Cader Idris to Dolgoch Falls, Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol.

The train clings to the hillside as it passes through woodland and over ravines, taking the route that the Victorians would have used daily. The trip takes about an hour each way. Your ticket allows you to break your journey and extend your day: you could take a country walk, explore wooded paths, discover waterfalls or visit the beach.

NARROW GUAGE RAILWAY MUSEUM
Free museum at Tywyn Wharf telling the story of the narrow gauge railways of Wales and beyond.

Tywyn Wharf station is home to the Narrow Gauge Railway Museum which tells the story of little railways across Britain and King’s Cafe has hot and cold menus, lunch time specials and a licensed bar.

DRIVE A STEAM TRAIN EXPERIENCE
‘You blow the whistle, release the brakes and open the regulator. A hiss of steam and the train starts to move - the start of the journey and the start of an experience of a lifetime’.

Learn to drive a historic steam locomotive hauling your own private train, bring your family and friends to share the experience. On your exclusive course you will have the full attention of three, fully qualified Talyllyn Railway staff (a Driver, Fireman and Guard).

TALYLLYN RAILWAY WEDDINGS
The Talyllyn Railway's tea room at Abergynolwyn Station is licensed to hold civil marriage ceremonies. Make your Wedding Day extra special, yet different and less formal - hire a steam-hauled train to collect you and your guests from one of our Stations between Tywyn and Dolgoch and carry you to Abergynolwyn Station for the wedding ceremony.

The Railway Gift Shop
