Just on the English side of the border with Wales and about 6 miles east of Knighton, Bucknell is within the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. An earth mound marks the remains of a Norman motte castle situated on the banks of the River Redlake, close to a river crossing point and to the parish church. The village has a population of approximately 650 and has an impressive number of small businesses.
Bucknell has a railway station on the Heart of Wales line which runs from Shrewsbury to Swansea.
