Heart of Wales by Rail via Swansea - Day 1

Welcome to our tour from Swansea with five days in Wales on a little train on the Heart of Wales Line. Taking in the market and spa towns along the way, we will visit Llandeilo, Llandovery, Llanwrtyd Wells, Llandrindod Wells and Knighton. Suggestions for overnight accommodation are in or very close to the towns (and their railway stations) that we will be visiting so that you can drop off your luggage when you arrive and not have to carry it around with you!

For each stage of the journey, there are notes available with points of interest along the railway as we travel up the line.

The itinerary is from Monday to Friday based on National Rail timetables from 15 December 2019 to 16 May 2020. Subsequent train times until December will probably be similar but will not be confirmed until nearer the time.

Note that the Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells starts on Monday 20th July 2020 for four days; it is the best-attended event of its kind in Europe attracting in the region of 240,000 visitors. This means that all accommodation for many miles around (especially in Builth & Llandrindod Wells) is likely to be booked. So avoid this week for this itinerary but book well in advance and spend a few days at the show another time! Llandrindod has a very popular Victorian Festival - 24th to 30th August 2020 - check accommodation in advance for this week.

How to join the tour:-
From London Paddington - Catch the 10.48 train direct to Swansea; it will arrive at 13.34 giving 50 minutes for some lunch.

From Cardiff - Take the 13.12 Swansea train which arrives at 14.15.

From Swansea - The Heart of Wales train heading for Shrewsbury leaves at 14.35.

Monday - We start the Tour at Swansea by taking 14.35 Heart of Wales Line Shrewsbury train and travel on the main West Wales railway line to Llanelli; note that if you prefer to sit facing the way we are going (or the other way round), the train leaves Llanelli travelling in the reverse direction. From here we take the Heart of Wales line through some of South Wales’ industrial heritage to reach the market town of Llandeilo. We call at Pontyffynon, Ammanford and Llandybie (there are also four request stops that we may stop at) and the journey takes just under an hour.

Journey notes available - please see Points of Interest Swansea-Llandeilo.

We arrive at Llandeilo at 15.30 and leave the train. Time to explore this thriving market town with a population 1,800 which has a mixture of Medieval, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian streets with many fine buildings of historic and architectural interest. It also has a very interesting range of small independent shops and a number of cafes.

Turn right out of Llandeilo station and left into Blende Road which leads to the main road through the town, Rhosmaen Street. (Right and right again into Station Road for antiques). Turn left and up the hill for places to have lunch and the shops. (Turn right into New Road and then right again for Carmarthen Road and the White Hart Inn - just over half a mile; this route passes the entrance to Dinefwr Park & Castle). Continue on Rhosmaen Street downhill (The Cawdor will be on your right) and then right for side streets and more shops (including Toast) and cafes.

Sitting proudly on a hill above the river Tywi, there can be fewer towns in Wales more attractive than Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire.

Some suggestions for staying overnight include The Cawdor on Rhosmaen Street, a Grade II listed Georgian building that has played ‘a pivotal role’ in the history of Llandeilo with an interesting mix of antique and contemporary styles, the White Heart Inn is a privately owned 19th century hostelry on Carmarthen Road or local B&Bs.
