Snowdonia Coast Town Tour by Rail - Day 5

Friday - For our final day, we will visit the attractive coastal village of Aberdyfi/Aberdovey (the journey takes about an hour and forty minutes) and we will then head back to Shrewsbury.

We again return to the Cambrian Coast National Rail station at Porthmadog (but this time with our luggage!) to catch the 09.57 Machynlleth bound train and travel south.

There are 12 request stops between Porthmadog and Aberdyfi; scheduled stops are at Minffordd and Penrhyndeudraeth followed by Harlech at 10.23 where we wait for another train to pass. Barmouth is next at 10.56 and then we call at Fairbourne and Tywyn. We arrive at Aberdyfi at 11.36 and leave the train.

The village has a population of 800 and grew based on the shipbuilding industry in the days of sail, it is now a very attractive spot for a holiday with a long beach that stretches all the way to Tywyn and a yacht club.

For the village centre, walk from the station and turn right when you reach the main road. There is a good selection of places to eat and shops along this road and in the side streets. Access to the beach, the harbour and the Tourist Information Centre on the right.

Porthmadog railway station is on the Cambrian Coast Line from Machynlleth to Pwllheli. The station is located less than a 5 minute walk from the town centre and connections to the heritage railways is via a 15 minute walk.
