Located south of the Brecon Beacons National Park on the River Tawe, the town is a good centre for walking; Dan yr Ogof caves are a short journey from the town centre.
Ystradgynlais is an old mining and industrial town in the Swansea Valley and many remnants of those times can still be found in the local area, including the iconic Ynyscedwyn Ironworks arches, in Glanrhyd.
