The unnavigable sections of the canal are ideal spots for peaceful angling. On most stretches you will find large tench, roach, bream, perch and pike. There are also carp, dace, rudd and crucian carp in the recently restored northern section of the canal.
Angling clubs and associations have fishing rights along the canal. A Waterways Wanderer permit can be obtained from British Waterways on .
The Montgomery Angling Association (MAA) lease the fishing rights on the Montgomery Canal in Wales from Tirymynach near Bank Lock (Bridge 109) to School Lane, Belan (Bridge 123).
