To the west of Rhayader there is a superb network of tracks that very in difficulty from easy family trails alongside the reservoirs to very tough moorland crossings only to be undertaken by the very fit.
Several of the trails can link with the spectacular lanes and mountain roads in the area such as the mountain road to Cwmystwyth, the dead-end lanes running west from Pontrhydfendigaid (between Devil's Bridge and Tregaron), the Devil's Staircase road to the north of Llanwrtyd Wells or the back road from Rhayader to Llangurig along the Wye Valley.
