Details

Dylan Thomas loved walking through the fields and lanes of Ceredigion - especially if there was a pub at the end of it with good beer and conversation. The beautiful countryside of Ceredigion was in Dylan's blood. He enjoyed the company of the local people, and listened with relish to the stories and gossip of the countryside.

Llanon - Dylan came to the pubs here with his friend, Tommy Herbert the vet. Further on are the villages of Pennant and Cilcennin, each with its own cluster of pubs, chapels and Welsh cottages.

Tal-Sarn - Dylan lived in Plas Gelli during the war years The mansion and surrounding countryside inspired some of Dylan's most haunting poems, such as a Winter's Tale and In Country Sleep. Dylan and Caitlin's daughter, Aeron, was conceived here on the banks of the river and named after it. Felin-Fach - Dylan and Caitlin walked here from Gelli, and enjoyed the beer and talk in the Vale of Aeron pub.

Llanerchaeron - Visit the mansion built by John Nash in the late 1790's, and now owned by the National Trust.

Aberaeron - A beautiful Georgian town. There is much to see and do here, though Dylan usually confined himself to socialising.

Llanina - Dylan first came here in the late 1930's. Dylan refers to Llanina's lost fields and houses in his poem, Ballad of the Long-legged Bait.

New Quay - Dylan visited frequently and stayed here in 1944/45 which was one of the most prolific periods of his writing career.

Llwyndafydd - The river Dewi flows through this hamlet, recalling the Dewi in Milk Wood.

Llangrannog - Dylan visited the Ship and the Pentre Arms, and once got thrown our for helping himself to beer!

Gilfachreda - Dylan came to Gilfachreda, just outside New Quay, to party at the Wern, the mansion of Alastair Graham. He had been Evelyn Waugh's lover, and was the model for Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited. Talgarreg - Dylan and Caitlin stayed in the village for a brief period in 1942. Dewi Emrys, one of Wales' best known bardic poets, lived here.

Lampeter - When Plas Gelli got overcrowded, Dylan stayed in the Castle Hotel. He enjoyed walking in the grounds of the College, and singing with the town rugby team!
