About
The sessile oak wood at Allt Rhyd y Groes near Llandovery, characteristic of woodlands in this part of Wales, hangs onto the steep northeast-facing slope of a hillside. Part wooded and part open, the Reserve takes in craggy heathland, grassland, tumbling streams and some fascinating and very rare species - all tucked up inside this northern Carmarthenshire valley. Further up the valley the exposed rocks, heathland and grassland - as well as many of the trees in the woodland - are home to a wide range of mosses and lichens, some of which are uncommon. The reserve is part of the Cwm Doethie - Mynydd Mallaen Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation.
Networks of paths provide access through the woodland and meadows. You can see swathes of heathland and upland grassland, together with views of the open valley and its craggy flanks, by tackling some steep and very rough ground. Please note, no paths are maintained outside the woodland.
