Good Day Out Piggy Walking in the Brecon Beacons

Are you looking for unusual and engaging things to do in the Brecon Beacons National Park?

Good Day Out Experience Days & Activities are perfect stress-busting ways to enjoy the lovely countryside of Mid Wales, just an hour's drive from Cardiff. Take a stroll in the company of a friendly little animal or learn about rural skills and wildlife conservation. All are small group activities, with knowledgeable, engaging, low-key trainers based in and around the beautiful Brecon Beacons.

The Good Day Out walks with animals are suitable for all ages and are a great way to get close to your new little friend whilst learning about their health and welfare. Choose from:

Good Day Out’s little Miniature Mediterranean Dinky Donkeys are full of character. Spend a couple of hours with them grooming then walking around the hill farm by their barn. The walk includes a picnic with panoramic views to Pen y Fan and the Central Beacons.

The Dinkies are available for walks most days year round - individuals as well as groups can book. Shorter walks and interactive barn play sessions are also available on demand.

There are also special canal Towpath Walks along the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal at Pencelli, including a stop at The Royal Oak’s beer garden for refreshments for you and the mini donkeys.

Swim with pigs in the Bahamas? Pah! Paddle with Pigs in the Brecon Beacons.

Good Day Out's Pig Walks are with little Kunekune piggies who love walking along the scenic Senni Valley with their handler who lives in this idyllic hidden valley. After walking with the pigs, you are treated to an ample spread of tea, coffee and cakes at the smallholding.

The pigs small in size and of steady temperament although they have big personalities. The name Kunekune means “fat and round”, so don’t expect any slender creatures!

With walks year-round, the girls enjoy the interaction, and like all our experiences, the walking is actually good for their health and wellbeing so you can be sure that you can have a great time whilst enjoying their great company.

If you would like a more “farmy” experience, you couldn’t get more Welsh than spending some quality time with a sheep on an upland hill farm. This lovely experience has been especially created by Good Day Out and is a curious mix between pony trekking and llama or alpaca walking, but with wonderful woolly companions.

Walk with your own sheep on a lead along ancient drovers' routes and across an organic hill farm, with a picnic in a scenic barn part way around. The gentle trek is great for all ages to enjoy this curiously mindful experience.

The creators of Sheep Trekking have been taking sheep for a walk for over 5 years and have been featured on BBC Countryfile and the national Press. The small flock that walks is now a mix of three breeds. Jacob sheep are a placid breed but a fair size, so there are newer additions to the fold in the form of tiny Ouessants which are the smallest naturally occurring breed of sheep, and the latest sheepy companions are Swiss Valais Blacknose sheep with their amazing white dreadlocks. These stunning looking sheep have been voted to be the world's favourite sheep breed.

The Sheep Trekking experience is available from March to the end of August for individuals to book on specific dates, but please get in touch for bespoke group bookings year round.

Learn all about shepherding with a working dog with Ross Games who trains sheep dogs and regularly competes internationally at sheep dog trials. If you love One Man and His Dog, you'll love this as you will have a chance to command a working sheep dog with sheep to move them around the field!

During this farm experience session, Ross will also show you some of the other livestock on this working Welsh Hill Farm. Meet their friendly cattle and sheep, as well as having interactive demostrations with a few of Ross' Welsh Border Collies at different stages of their training.

Spend the morning at a working Hedgehog Rescue near Lampeter. Learn about 1st aid and emergency care and help feed any hogs and hoglets in the rescue. A great chance to help our local wildlife and to see first hand how a real Rescue operates. We have dates to book from July to November so it is extremely likely you will be see actual hedghogs since there are usually at least 20 to 30 within their care throughout this period before hibernation.

Be a helper on a Welsh Hill Farm at lambing time. Spend a day with the farmer and his family and hopefully see a lamb being born whilst also tending to the flock of around 200 ewes.
