About

The Usk Reservoir in the western end of the Brecon Beacons National Park is a remote upland 280 acre reservoir below the Black Mountain. It is surrounded by the Glasfynnedd Forest and has a 5.4 mile waymarked route for walking and cycling from the car park around the reservoir and across the dam.

The reservoir is highly regarded for fishing as one of the best still water trout fisheries in Wales with fly fishing, spinning and worm fishing all permitted (the western end of the water is fly fishing only).

STARGAZING - Dark Sky Discovery Site
Usk Reservoir is one of the National Park's top ten sites for stargazing and is one of the National Park darkest and quietest. Immerse yourself in nature as the scarlet skies turn indigo blue and finish each day with an unforgettable sunset experience. Car parking is provided, and you can walk out onto the dam itself.

The car park area is a beautiful place to have a family picnic as well as an ideal place to enjoy outstanding dark skies. The large flat area allows set up of telescopes and the road access from Trecastle means it is easily accessible. This area enjoys a naked eye limiting magnitude of 6.4 and is protected from the light pollution of the South Wales valleys.
