About

Lôn Cambria  is a 113-mile cycle route in the National Cycle Network which runs from Aberystwyth on the Mid Wales coast, through the Cambrian Mountains and the Mid Wales Marches to Shrewsbury.

Starting in Aberystwyth this spectacular route crosses the heart of Mid Wales through the Cambrian Mountains and alongside the beautiful Elan Valley reservoirs to Rhayader. With red kites soaring above, the route follows quiet lanes linking the picturesque market towns of Llanidloes, Newtown and Welshpool.

A final climb on the Roman Road over Long Mountain offers panoramic views before descending into Shrewsbury with its rail connections for the journey home. A great cycle short break.

Access the route using the Cambrian Rail line.

Observations by cyclists:

Lon Cambria sustrans 81 Llanafan to Pont-rhyd-y-groes on-road
"This road is closed (since January '23') however its possible for walkers & cyclists to pass. Suggestions: signage should indicate that the road is passable for walkers & cyclists – we were informed by another person that the road was passable.
It would appear that the quiet road could be reopened by having a short one-way (with priority) section, avoiding the river-side"

Lon Cambria sustrans 81 east of Pont-rhyd-y-groes start of traffic free section (leaving B4574) then through Coed Hafod (shown as traffic-free cycle route on OS 25,000 map)
"There are signs on the gate stating: “Private Land” “No Entry to Unauthorised Vehicles”. Such unofficial signs are off-putting. We did not go through the gate because it appeared that the cycle path was overgrown & therefore not very suitable for the disabled-trike. This was disappointing as from the OS map it looks like an excellent route"
