About

Discover Dolforwyn Castle, an ancient fortress nestled on a picturesque ridge above the enchanting Severn Valley near Newtown. Originally constructed between 1273 and 1277 by the Welsh Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, also known as Llywelyn the Last, this imposing stronghold served as a strategic vantage point overseeing the English lordship of Montgomery. Ascend the steep path leading to the castle and delight in the fact that entry is free.

Immerse yourself in the captivating tale of Welsh-English conflict as you explore the rich history that surrounds Dolforwyn Castle. The sweeping panoramic views from its elevated position alone make this destination an absolute must-visit.

Perched majestically atop a ridge, this rectangular castle was meticulously designed to safeguard Llywelyn's southeastern frontier. Its very construction prompted a letter from King Edward I to Prince Llywelyn in 1273, forbidding him from erecting the castle. In a display of masterful irony and politeness, the prince replied that he required no permission from the king to raise a stronghold within his own principality.

Dolforwyn Castle fell to Roger Mortimer after a determined siege lasting two weeks in 1277. Subsequently, it was granted to the Mortimers, a formidable marcher family. While the castle was maintained for several years, its once-mighty walls eventually succumbed to ruin by 1398.

While visiting Dolforwyn Castle, be sure to explore the nearby attractions as well. Just a short distance away, you'll find the splendid Powis Castle and Gardens, as well as the historic Montgomery Castle, both well worth a visit.

Embark on a journey to Dolforwyn Castle, where centuries of history come to life, offering an unforgettable experience amidst breathtaking scenery and remarkable tales of resilience.
