About

Many of the fantastic scenic drives in Mid Wales are set against panoramic and breathtaking backdrops and fantastic for motorists who love to explore places off the beaten track and this 20 mile mountain road from Llanidloes to Machynlleth, via Llyn Clywedog Reservoir is no exception. From Llanidloes, head north west taking the B4518 mountain road following this route across the Cambrian Mountain uplands all the way to Machynlleth.

Your starting point is the market town of Llanidloes, which is the very first town on the banks of the mighty River Severn, which starts it's long journey through the Severn Valley from the nearby Hafren Forest high in the Cambrian Mountains. The Hafren Forest has ample parking, a boardwalk and various other long distance walking trails including Glyndwr's Way National Trail and the Severn Way pass through the forest.

The views are wonderful and you can expect to see red kites along the way and in the summer months there are ospreys nesting near to Llyn Clywedog Reservoir. You'll pass the former lead mining community of Dylife and the Dylife Gorge and stop to take a picture at the Wynford Vaughan-Thomas viewing point which affords panoramic views over the surrounding area before descending towards Machynlleth, the ancient capitol of Wales.

Machynlleth is located in the heart of the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere. This ancient market town is the gateway to the Mid Wales coast and links  The Coatal Way south towards Aberystwyth and the Ceredigion coast, and north to southern Snowdonia.
