Dragon Hotel

The nearby castle - destroyed by Cromwell - provided many of the beams and timbers for this black-and-white fronted, 17th-century coaching inn at the heart of town.

The homely, traditional décor extends to the cosy beamed restaurant, which has a fireplace converted from an old bread oven.

The Welsh cooking - with a nod to the Mediterranean - is via wholesome dishes that make sound use of local produce. Expect main dishes like roast venison with braised red cabbage, polenta and balsamic and shallot gravy, salmon supreme with béarnaise and dill potatoes, or roast sea bass on braised fennel.
