A Day Out in the Tywi Valley

Train times are for Mondays to Fridays based on timetables to December 2017. Bus times are for days as stated as of May 2017.

The Heart of Wales railway line runs across rural south and mid Wales and although it's one of the smallest, it certainly visits some fantastic locations! If you are heading up from Swansea why not catch the 09.33 train (or 09.54 from Llanelli) Mondays to Fridays and head to Llandeilo. This historic medieval town is situated on the Afon Tywi and is only an hour's ride on the train from Swansea.

Llandeilo Railway Station

Llandeilo railway station is on the Heart of Wales line that runs from Shrewsbury to Swansea.

Sitting proudly on a hill above the river Tywi, there can be fewer towns in Wales more attractive than Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire.

Llandeilo sits on the westernmost point of the Brecon Beacons and is a few miles away from the start of the Beacons Way Trails which traverses the mountains.

The town centre is certainly worth a visit because of its quirky shops and its unique qualities found in the independent shops.

There are a number of small cafes in the town where you can obtain some mid-morning tea or lunch!

Once you have explored the historic town, we recommend you walk over to Dinefwr Castle and estate, where you can explore the grounds using the broad-walks or visit inside the castle and Newton house. The castle sits perched on top of a steep incline, which overlooks the river below. Newton house is surrounded by woodland and a deer park! The train home leaves Llandeilo at 17.10.

Alternatively, if you fancy something a bit different then why not head over to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. This is only a 25 minute bus journey from Llandeilo - Service 279 leaves from the end of New Road by Yr Hen Vic, a five minute walk from the centre, at 12.45 (it runs Mondays to Thursdays only). The same bus service leaves the Garden at 16.25 for Carmarthen railway station where you can catch the 16.58 back to Swansea or Llanelli.
