Cambrian & Cambrian Coast Line

About

The Cambrian Line runs cross-country from Shrewsbury through a varied rural landscape, beginning in the gentle, rolling borderlands of the Mid Wales Marches and through north Powys to the Mid Wales Coast.

The Cambrian Line runs from Shrewsbury through Welshpool, Newtown and Caersws to Machynlleth and Aberystwyth. The Cambrian Coast section of the line tales you from Machynlleth to Porthmadog in North Wales.

You will travel through the Upper Severn Valley which is a varied rural landscape, beginning in the gentle, rolling borderlands of the Mid Wales Marches around Welshpool and Newtown before entering the wilder uplands of farms and forest in the Cambrian Mountains.

At Machynlleth station in the heart of the UNESCO Dyfi Biosphere, The Cambrian Line splits in two with one section going south on to Aberystwyth and the other section following the Mid Wales coast northwards through to Pwllheli.

Travelling south from Machynlleth to Aberystwyth, animal lovers will enjoy a visit to the Dyfi Osprey Centre at Dyfi Junction, Borth Animalarium or the Ynys Las Nature Reserve.

Castles and historic sites to visit along the way- just for starters you have Powis Castle & Gardens near Welshpool and Aberystwyth Castle on the seafront in Aberystwyth.

THE CAMBRIAN COAST LINE
The Cambrian Coast line clings to the Mid Wales coastline for the best part of 2½ hours along one of the most scenic railway lines in the UK.

From the small request stop at Dovey Junction, you will travel north through coastal towns and villages of  southern Snowdonia including Machynlleth, Aberdovey, Barmouth and Harlech. On the journey, you will cross the half-mile-long, 150-year-old Barmouth bridge, which spans the Mawddach Estuary. Travelling onwards towards north Wales, look out for Portmeirion on the far side of the sandy Dwyryd estuary and views of Harlech and Criccieth castles.
