Aberystwyth in Mid Wales

Aberystwyth is a University town and the largest town in Mid Wales. It is home to the prestigious National Library of Wales which has the largest collection of books, maps, archives, bibliographies, pictures, photographs and rare manuscripts in Wales. It also holds guided tours, events and several different exhibitions at any one time.

Stroll along the Victorian seafront promenade in Aberystwyth, one of the principal towns along the West Wales coast and in the evening check out the Aberystwyth Arts Centre for the latest shows, performances, exhibitions and cinema.

For the best view of the town climb the steep Constitution Hill, either on foot, or aboard the Aberystwyth Cliff railway; the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain that has been sparing weary legs since opening in 1896; a truly vintage experience and surely the most relaxing way to get to the top! On a clear day you’ll be rewarded with views of Cardigan Bay and as far as Pembrokeshire.

The Aberystwyth to Clarach section of the Wales Coast Path passes over Constitution Hill, with Aberystwyth to Borth being a challenging yet popular section of Heritage Coast.

At the southern end of the promenade are the ruins of Aberystwyth’s 13th century castle, founded by Edward I and used by Owain Glyndŵr as a revolutionary base in 1404.

Aberystwyth - the cultural capital of Wales

Aberystwyth has a legitimate claim to be the cultural capital of Wales. In addition to Aberystwyth University and the hugely respected National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth Arts Centre is a focal point for contemporary Welsh language and culture.

It is one of the largest in the UK and is widely recognised as a 'national flagship for the arts'.

Catch S4C’s popular detective drama 'Hinterland' or 'Y Gwyll' which is filmed in and around Aberystwyth.

The town and surrounding area is a fantastic place for a holiday or short break, and a central base for exploring all that the Cardigan Bay / Cambrian Coast has to offer
