Welshpool / Y Trallwng

Welshpool  lies only 4 miles from the border with England. Its Welsh name 'Y Trallwng' means 'the marshy or sinking land' referring to the fact that the town is low-lying on the River Severn. In English, the town was initially known as Pool, but was changed to Welshpool to distinguish it from Poole in Dorset.

The town is located at a main entry point into Wales in the Severn Valley. It is a natural hub of communications and maintains a long standing tradition as a marketplace for the area. Welshpool hosts a livestock market which is one of the largest one-day sheep markets in Europe.
