The Rhiw Valley Light Railway is located south-west of Welshpool between the villages of Berriew and Manafon. It was built to a 15” gauge in 1970 by the late Jack Woodroffe and runs for approximately 0.75 mile round Lower House Farm alongside the river. Rhiw Valley is run on a strictly “not for profit” basis with all donations and entrance fees being spent on developing and maintaining the railways infrastructure and rolling stock. It currently has three engines - a steam tank engine, a steam tender engine and a diesel shunter.

The Railway is not open to the public on a daily basis but does have for Open Days from May until October. Trains run from noon until 5pm and visitors are welcome to picnic in the garden or grounds.

Opening details

Trains will run between 10:30 and 16:30 each day.

From Welshpool, take the A483 towards Newtown and turn right where signposted to Berriew; in the village, take the B4390 for Minafon and New Mills. Lower House Farm and the Rhiw Valley Light Railway will be on your left before you get to Minafon.
