Tal-y-llyn Lake is a ribbon lake situated north-east of Tywyn and north of Machynlleth at the foot of Cadair Idris; the River Dysynni flows from the lake through the village of Abergynolwyn to the sea north of Tywyn near Tonfanau. The Talyllyn Railway is a historic narrow-gauge steam railway running from Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol.
