An exhibition that aims to think of photography in its widest sense, Opening the Shutters reflects upon the nostalgic notion of capturing a photograph - be it with film, pinhole photography, photograms, digitally or by a mobile phone - to record our lives and stories through the camera lens.
The artists' exhibiting are Bethan Edwards-Wilson, Sheree Murphy, Fynne Saunders and Ruby Shoubridge.
Murphy's ethereal photographs - entering descendents' homes after a family member has moved or passed away, and sometimes featuring herself - interweave past and present to unveil the material and immaterial remains of these uninhabited places of belonging.
Shoubridge has challenged the ubiquitous nature of capturing an image using a mobile phone. The hazy images and accidental snaps echo memories of childhood, abstract by nature, which translate a strong feeling or light, and the role each plays in the visual recollection of memories.
Edwards-Wilson graduated with an Honours Degree in Fine Art from Exeter College of Art and Design . She has 15 years freelance professional experience in the broadcasting and events sectors, working for a range of clients that include the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 together with independent TV and Film Production companies. Her photographic work explores themes of memory and process and an extended engagement with a subject. The work in the 'In Loving Memory' series taps into her background within a family of three generations of monumental masons; recalling fond memories of time spent within graveyards, churches and the studio workshop. The work explores the language of commemoration, reflecting shifts in social attitudes and the aesthetics of remembrance.
Fynne Saunders, from Llandrindod Wells, is currently studying at Herefordshire College of Arts.
