Arthog is a village and community on the A493 near Fairbourne, 7 miles south-west of Dolgellau; it has a population of just over 1,000.
In 1894, an entrepreneur from Cardiff bought land overlooking the Mawddach estuary near Arthog and by 1902 he had completed a row of terraced properties - Mawddach Crescent. This was the start of a purpose-built holiday resort he intended for the area but the planned development went no further.
Arthog is well known for its outdoor activity centres and the nearby Llynnau Cregennen (Cregennen lakes). The Mawddach Trail, popular with both walkers and cyclists, runs from Morfa Mawddach and Arthog to Dolgellau along the trackbed of the former Barmouth to Ruabon railway line.
