Monmouth Rd,

START: Small car park on the B4521 (just north of Abergavenny, between the Maindiff Court Hospital and Llanddewi Skirrid there's a small lay-by/car park on the northern side of the road). Nearest postcode for sat nav NP7 8AW (approx..)

1. With your back to the road, turn left to walk through the barrier and follow the track as it bends sharp right. Continue uphill to a gate and stile and cross. Bear right, following the yellow arrow. Go up some steps then look out for another way-marker at crossroads for paths - follow it straight ahead for more steps.

2. Cross the forest track to reach gate. Turn left and walk beside stone wall. As the wall veers left stay ahead on the path to soon reach a ruined wall. Cross this (continue uphill a little) and into open area and follow the path as it meanders along the side of the hill.

3. Eventually reach a valley and continue along main path, passing a pond on the left. The path then bears right to later reach another open space, and a fence on the left. Continue ahead on the path to reach a gate, but bear right just before it for a path heading steeply uphill.

4. Stay with this main path (look out for the Beacons way-markers) to eventually arrive at the top of the ridge. To reach the summit and the ruins of medieval church St Michael's, turn right for a few steps. Return to the top of the ridge and keep ahead for a track that heads straight down the narrow side of the hill.

5. Towards the bottom follow the path as it bears right to meet a stone path. Walk along this to a wall and turn right to reach the gate at the top of the woods. Go back down the steps and through the wood to re-trace your steps back to the car park.

Points of interest:
* Often known by its English name, The Skirrid, Ysgyryd Fawr lies at the eastern edge of the Black Moutains.
* At the summit are ruins of a medieval Catholic Church.
* Legend has it the soil of Ysgyryd Fawr is very fertile, so pilgrimages were often made to the summit at Michaelmas.
